Description
An installation of Lee's comic art in progress, downstairs in 16mm beneath deli / cafe, adjacent to the screening room where Larissa Alves will be showing her 2 short films from 7 tomorrow (Saturday) .
I'll (Lee) be adding to / altering my installation for a month, leaving a graphic novel type drawing on the walls and developing a book. Feel free to come along and throw in your own 2 pence worth.. :-) email me first as I wont be there all the time.

24 May – 21 June 2008
Monday – Friday 8 am – 9 pm, Saturday 9 am – 9 pm, Sunday 10 am – 6 pm
Over the next month at 16mm I will be deciphering drawings and texts made over the last year or two where I limited myself to paper and black pen. I did branch out now and again, but then brought it back to the basic rule of pen and paper.
By adding to and taking away from the installation of work in progress in the space I expect to find linkages within the frames to form an editable story, and will leave a trace of the activity in the space in the form of a graphic novel style work on the walls of the room.
This will begin on 24th May 2008 at 7pm, to coincide with the screening of two films by Larissa Alves in the adjacent room, and will continue until 21st June at 7pm.
I wont be in the space all of the time, and neither will all of the books, so if you want to meet with me to look through this work – give your opinion, which is much encouraged… please contact me at leeasimmons@gmail.com or see the blog www.leesimmons.org for predicted times that I will be in the space.
Drawings and books form one side of my practice that feeds to and from: sieves… a methodology whereby I involve groups of people and public spaces in process based work that incorporates consultation and collaboration, to arrive at a final idea.
Here I work in varied media as the work is concept driven, hinging on the process of researching, testing and developing ideas, which are often documented with photography and video.
A recurrent concept behind this work is with perceptions and communications mainly of people living in the Western developed world, regarding time and space, looking at the way that we interact with each other and the places that we inhabit.
The media I utilise is diverse and the work does not easily fit into one category, though there is an ongoing interest in the dissemination of ideas, working with public space; and community – both investigating and contributing to an existing notion or sense of community and generating new ones of varied durations.
Concepts and activities are often brought back together / resolved, and moved on from with project books, that form an ongoing means of communication and thought. These are hand made and often have a web based or digital version, to distribute the work widely and cheaply yet still without censorship.
The practice of slowly hand binding the real space books adjacent to the wider and faster production of the digital format is something that interests me, as does the process of filtering ideas and creating visual effects, in conjunction with lifting them from existing settings.
